The story of Almond Blossoms
Van Gogh painted Almond Blossoms, a sparkling still life of delicate branches against a bright blue sky, for his newborn nephew Vincent Willem. The almond tree blooms early, heralding spring as soon as February, so Van Gogh chose it as a symbol of new life. The subject, the sharp contours and the placement of the branches were inspired by Japanese prints. He intended the painting to hang above his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo's bed, but the couple hung it in their living room above the piano.
