How to Tell If a Scarf Is Satin or Silk

Satin and silk are often mixed up, because both can be smooth and shiny. Here is how to tell if a scarf is satin or silk, what each word actually means, what to check on the label and why the answer matters for price, feel and care.

Satin vs silk: what is the difference?

Silk is a fibre; satin is a weave. Silk is a natural protein fibre made by silkworms. Satin is a way of weaving threads so that long "floats" lie on the surface, giving one smooth, glossy face and one duller back. A satin fabric can be woven from silk, polyester, nylon or other fibres, and silk can be woven into other weaves, such as crepe de chine, chiffon or twill. That is why "satin" and "silk" are not interchangeable: a scarf can be silk satin, polyester satin or silk that is not satin at all.

How to tell if a scarf is satin or silk

1. Read the composition label. This is the only reliable check. Look for a named fibre and percentage, such as "100% mulberry silk" or "100% polyester". "Silky" describes a feel, not a fibre.
2. Look at both sides. Satin weave has a glossy face and a matt back. A silk scarf in another weave may look similar on both sides.
3. Look at the sheen. Silk tends to have a soft, subtle lustre that shifts colour slightly in the light. Synthetic satin is often brighter and more uniformly shiny.
4. Feel the temperature. Silk feels cool at first and warms quickly to the skin. Polyester satin can feel slippery and stays cooler or slightly clammy.
5. Check the weight and momme. Silk is often described by momme, a measure of weight. A listing that gives a momme figure, such as 12 momme, is describing silk.
6. Consider the price. Silk takes longer to produce, so a large silk scarf costs more than a polyester satin one of the same size. A very low price for "silk" is a reason to check the label.

Can shine or softness prove that it is silk?

No. Different fibres can produce a smooth, lustrous fabric, so treat feel and sheen as clues, not proof. You may read about burn tests online, but do not cut, burn or damage a scarf to test it. If the material is not clear, ask the seller for the composition before you buy.

Is satin as good as silk?

They suit different needs. Silk is breathable, light and drapes beautifully, but it needs gentle hand washing. Satin made from synthetic fibres gives a similar glossy look at a lower price and is usually easier to care for. For an everyday colourful scarf, satin is a sensible choice; for a special gift such as a silk anniversary present, choose a scarf described as silk.
